On Friday 3rd February, our Year 7 students took part in the RSPB Big Schools Birdwatch during their Science lessons. In separate groups and in different locations around the school grounds, the students spent approximately 20 minutes counting the number of different birds of each species they could see in that time. They recorded their sightings on to the RSPB identification sheets and once the time was up, all the groups' results were added together.
Headteacher and keen bird-spotter, Mr Warren, joined some of the groups to point out different birds, including the many pied wagtails that frequent the school site, and even identify some of the birdsong we could hear.
Students identified nine different bird types and a total of 49 birds. Wood pigeons and black-headed gulls made up the vast majority of all the birds spotted, which will come as no surprise to anyone familiar with the Box Lane site!
Mrs Jackson-Moss has now submitted all our data to the RSPB to support their survey.
